350 Day of Action on 24 Oct 2009
Our intial goal achieved: the community came together to put on a magnificent and fun event attended by nearly 200 people as part of the 350 Global Day of Climate Action.
It was opened by Ann Daniels, Devon's own arctic explorer and climate surveyor who described the thinning of the polar ice and the scientists' estimate it will have largely disappeared in 10 years.
Children from Doddiscoombesleigh, Hennock & Dunford schools danced in a 350 formation on the field. Our professional photographer, Vanessa, recorded the event from above.
Inside the hall the Kalash ATS tribal belly-dancers put on a great display with the audience joining in at the end. The final event was commedienne/poet Jackie Juno who had the audience glued to their seats and in gales of laughter with her 'stand-up poetry'. In addition there was a fabulous mix of displays and videos with practical ideas for reducing the carbon footprint in the Valley as well as food & drink (locally sourced).
Worldwide the event was a huge success. Over 5200 actions across 181 countries (there are only 195) were posted on www.350.org. CNN reported it was "the most widespread day of political action in the planet’s history." For our pictures see Greener-Teign photos. In the media, BBC Spotlight and Mid Devon Advertiser gave us excellent coverage.
Ban Ki Moon said "I would like to thank the millions of people in 181 countries who participated in 350.org's Day of Climate Action on 24 October. It was one of the most inspiring examples of grassroots political action on global warming the world has ever witnessed."
Raising the Flag on 11 Oct 2009
A fun ceremony involved children and adults on horseback carrying the 350 flag from Ashton to the Haldon Belvedere where it was unfurled on a flagpole erected on one of the turrets - see photo at top of this page . Walkers and cyclists joined the fun. Videos on climate change from the pupils of Hennock school were shown inside the tower. Checkout the photos and the Express & Echo coverage. The Mid Devon Advertiser also carried the report. For more pictures see Greener-Teign photos.
