Greener Teign
Since our formation in July 2009 we have organised several successful events and taken part in others.
Doddi School fete 9 July & Christow Show 20 Aug 2011
We had a presence at both these events at which we had a selection of old-fashioned sustainable games. Great fun was had by all those participating.
Film: Food Inc. March/April 2011
Several showings were held of this acadamy award nominated documentary about the industrialisation of farming. Many were shocked at the account of the direction farming has taken in the US and the way it could move in the UK.
Eco Fashion event a huge success: our contribution to the Global Day of Doing on 10.10.10
Novice and expert, young and old responded on 10th October with enthusiasm to the invitation to adapt or customize recycled clothes and to think about alternatives to resource-hungry high street fashion. On the loveliest afternoon of the autumn, Embercombe's Centrefire Hall was packed with dressmakers, knitters and recyclers.

Pupils from Teign School, Tiverton High, KEVICC, Exeter School and West Exe asa well as a group of volunteers from Young Devon all took part. Help was on hand for youngsters grappling with reloading old-fashioned bobbins on hand-operated sewing machines or exploring the possibilities of appliqué.

The newly fashioned creations, together with a few vintage items and four of Peet Leather's stunning felt coats, were modelled on the catwalk to huge applause by up to twenty models ranging in age through seven decades.
Christow school demonstrated sustainability at the eco fashion event by showing "Teigny bags" and naturally dyed T-shirts they had made.

Bidding at the ensuing auction started slowly and rose to a peak of excitement as a necklace donated by Joanna Lumley, accompanied by a signed dedication, went under the hammer. Although the event had a serious point to make about the need to reduce emissions and the use of scarce resources it managed to be both enjoyable and to raise much needed funds for Greener Teign's on-going climate work.

Christow resident, Steve Vercoe, who brought his family to the event, said "we hadn't understood the impact of the fashion industry on the world's precious resources, so it was great to witness the young people's joy in making new clothes out of old ones and doing their bit to slow climate change."
This was one of 7347 actions which took place on 10.10.10 in 188 countries co-ordinated by 350.org. Their focus is on the number 350 - as in parts per million of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. If we can't get below that, scientists say, the damage we're already seeing from global warming will continue and accelerate. But 350 is more than a number - it's a symbol of where we need to head as a planet. Young people in Devon demonstrated their awareness of this on 10th October as they re-thought fashion.

We are grateful for support for the eco fashion event from Dartmoor Sustainable Development Fund (Greener Teign's day was part of the Dartmoor & Exmoor Low Carbon Festival)

and also support from Teignbridge District Council.
Greener Teign film show and AGM on 1 Dec 2010
The event started with a showing of the thought-provoking film "Beyond the Tipping Point" followed by a discussion of the issues raised. The evening ended with the AGM, the minutes of which are included here. The report from the Chair and some interesting comments from the Chair are included separately.

Greener Teign had a stand at the show for the second year with an additional display of the Weather History project. 11 new members signed up.
Embercombe Summer Festival 4 July 2010
Our stand at this event generated a lot of interest.
Johathon Porritt opens new building at Doddi School on 14th May 2010

Doddi School 350 flag taken to The Wave, London on 5th Dec 2009
1000's of protesters, including some from Greener-Teign, attended this event which started at Grosvenor Square and culminated in the surrounding of Parliament using Lambeth and Westminster bridges, a distance of 1.5 miles. By the time the head of the 15 deep procession had completed the circuit, the tail was still some way away from starting. For picures of the march contact our photographer Vanessa.
350 Day of Action on 24 Oct 2009
Our intial goal achieved: the community came together to put on a magnificent and fun event attended by nearly 200 people as part of the 350 Global Day of Climate Action.
It was opened by Ann Daniels, Devon's own arctic explorer and climate surveyor who described the thinning of the polar ice and the scientists' estimate it will have largely disappeared in 10 years.
Children from Doddiscoombesleigh, Hennock & Dunford schools danced in a 350 formation on the field. Our professional photographer, Vanessa, recorded the event from above.
Inside the hall the Kalash ATS tribal belly-dancers put on a great display with the audience joining in at the end. The final event was commedienne/poet Jackie Juno who had the audience glued to their seats and in gales of laughter with her 'stand-up poetry'. In addition there was a fabulous mix of displays and videos with practical ideas for reducing the carbon footprint in the Valley as well as food & drink (locally sourced).
Worldwide the event was a huge success. Over 5200 actions across 181 countries (there are only 195) were posted on www.350.org. CNN reported it was "the most widespread day of political action in the planet’s history." For our pictures see Greener-Teign photos. In the media, BBC Spotlight and Mid Devon Advertiser gave us excellent coverage.
Ban Ki Moon said "I would like to thank the millions of people in 181 countries who participated in 350.org's Day of Climate Action on 24 October. It was one of the most inspiring examples of grassroots political action on global warming the world has ever witnessed."
Raising the Flag on 11 Oct 2009

A fun ceremony involved children and adults on horseback carrying the 350 flag from Ashton to the Haldon Belvedere where it was unfurled on a flagpole erected on one of the turrets - see photo at top of this page. Walkers and cyclists joined the fun. Videos on climate change from the pupils of Hennock school were shown inside the tower. Checkout the photos. For more pictures see Shane's photos. The Express & Echo and also the Mid Devon Advertiser carried the reports of the event.

Age of Stupid on 22 Sept 2009
A really successful showing of the film to about 120 people with a good discussion afterwards lead by Suzy Edwards from Embercombe. Thanks are due to John and Emma Birkin for letting us use their wonderful venue, The Great Barn. The event generated some much-needed funds for Greener Teign.
Christow Show on 22 Aug 2009
Greener Teign had a stand at the show which created a great deal of interest. 15 new members signed up.
